September 3, 2026 Why I'm building the opposite of Toast for restaurants that hate SaaS

Small restaurants don't need a $500/month POS. They need something that runs on WhatsApp — the tool they already use every day.

The interesting part isn’t really WhatsApp—it’s whether the restaurants you’re targeting are rejecting the POS category itself or just the cost and complexity of existing options. Have you seen a consistent reason for choosing this model?

Both, but it splits pretty cleanly by size.

The 1-2 location owners — they're rejecting the category. They've never used a POS, they run everything through their head and WhatsApp, and the moment you say "software" they check out. Doesn't matter how good it is. If it looks like software, it's a no.

The 3+ location ones who've actually tried Toast or Square — they're rejecting the implementation. Either the pricing killed it, or setup was too heavy, or their staff just stopped using it. A lot of them still pay for it and use it as basically a card reader while the real operations live in a spreadsheet or a group chat.

WhatsApp is interesting because it dodges both objections. Nothing to install for the first group, nothing new to check for the second.

That split is much sharper than the WhatsApp angle itself. I’d be interested in digging into how those two segments differ once they actually have to pay for the solution. What’s the best email to reach you on?

About

Small restaurants use WhatsApp all day but track sales, inventory, and staff on paper or in their head. TableAI turns WhatsApp into their operations tool — text what happened, get a briefing at 7am.
