In 2013, the company I was working for closed, and I found myself without a job. For some time, my friend and former schoolmate, Duncan Wilcox, and I had been thinking about doing something together, so we took the opportunity to seriously start a project. But what? After many more or less convincing ideas, we asked ourselves: “What is the thing we hate doing most on the computer that we could try to make better?” Without hesitation, we both answered: writing HTML and CSS. So why not create a completely visual tool that would allow users to build beautiful and high-performing websites without needing to know any underlying technology, enabling them to focus solely on the creative and design aspects of a site? We worked for six months in Duncan’s garage, and on April 24, 2014, version 1.0 of Sparkle Visual Website Builder (today “Sitely”) was released on the Mac App Store. Looking back now, we can’t even remember how we managed to get all that work done in just six months...
