September 10, 2026 Betting on "give value first" instead of a signup wall

I keep going back and forth on this, but I think I've landed on something. Most of Selfinance sits behind a signup, which makes sense for a dashboard that tracks your actual money, but it also means someone has to trust me before they get anything at all. That's a big ask for a random app they found on the internet.

So I'm flipping it for one piece. I'm building a FIRE calculator that's just... there. No account, no email, nothing. You put in your savings, what you're adding monthly, expected returns, and it gives you your number and roughly when you'd hit it. You can mess with the inputs and see how it shifts if you save more or retire earlier or the market does worse than you hoped.

The bet is pretty simple. If the calculator is actually good, people will use it, some of them will come back later wanting to track that number over time instead of just checking it once, and by then they've already gotten value from me for free. That feels like a much better first impression than "sign up to see if this is useful."

It also means I've got something concrete to share instead of just linking a homepage and hoping people take my word for it. A calculator is easy to try in two minutes and easy to argue with if my math is off, which honestly I'd rather know now than find out later.

Still working out how far to take it. Inflation adjustment, part time income after FIRE, maybe letting people save a scenario without forcing an account. If you've built something similar or used a FIRE calculator that actually earned your trust, I'd like to hear what made it feel legit versus what felt like a black box spitting out a random number.

September 6, 2026 Why I gave my finance app an AI connector instead of another chatbot?

For years I tracked my money in a spreadsheet that broke every time I had to update a price by hand. Then I tried a few budgeting apps, and every one of them ignored investments completely. Budget in one place, portfolio in another, net worth nowhere.

So I built Selfinance: budgeting, investments, net worth, debt, and emergency funds, all in one dashboard, working across currencies.

The part I actually got excited about is the AI connector. Instead of opening the app to log an expense or check where I stand, I just tell Claude or ChatGPT to do it. "Log a $40 grocery expense" or "what's my net worth in EUR" and it just works.

The thing I spent the most time on wasn't the AI part, it was making sure it's safe. Selfinance doesn't connect to your bank or broker accounts at all, so there's nothing for the AI to touch there. Within the app itself, every trade, expense, or cash move goes through a preview and confirm step before anything actually changes.

If you manage money across more than one currency day to day, freelancing, remote work, living abroad, I'd love to know what actually breaks for you in the tools you're using now. That's the gap I built this for, and I want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious.

The connector feels more consequential than the chatbot angle. Are users actually checking or updating their finances more often because they can do it through Claude/ChatGPT, or are they mostly using it for the same tasks they’d otherwise do in the dashboard?

June 3, 2025 Hi Indie Hackers time to lunch Selfinance.pro 🚀

I’m super excited to introduce Selfinance – an all-in-one personal finance dashboard I built to finally escape the mess of spreadsheets I was using to manage my money.

For years, I tracked everything manually—net worth, investments, emergency fund, budgeting, even debt planning. But the constant copy-pasting, updating balances, and fixing formulas was draining. I wanted something automatic, visual, and built for how I think about money.

So I created Selfinance — a tool that gives you a complete, real-time picture of your finances in one place. It tracks everything from crypto and stocks to bonds, mortgages, and savings. No more tab-switching or data entry. Just clear, dynamic insights into your financial life, all updated automatically.

Whether you're building an emergency fund, planning for FIRE, or just want to understand where your money’s going—Selfinance is built to give you that clarity and control.

Would love to hear what you think, what you'd love to see next, or how you're managing your finances today.

Thanks so much for checking it out! 🙌

I built Selfinance because spreadsheets kept breaking and budgeting apps ignored investments. It tracks budgeting, investments, net worth, debt, and emergency funds across currencies, and comes with an AI connector
