October 9, 2025 Small side tools that turned out more useful than expected

At Migroot.io, we built a simple free feature that checks whether your country has a double taxation agreement with the one you’re moving to.

It was meant to be just a small helper for our relocation tracker but people loved it. It became one of the main ways new users discover us.

Now we’re thinking of turning it into a proper sub-feature inside the main product, so taxes and visas live in one place.

What other small but useful things have you added to your product that ended up working better than planned?

It is indeed a helpful feature, and the interface is so smooth.

  2. 1

People often underestimate the importance of simplicity in a product. This tax feature is definitely very helpful and straightforward and simple to use. I remember to make a simple tool to track flights(whereflight) and people loved it because of the easy interface. Appreciate your thought on making this. Kudos!

October 7, 2025 Does your referral program work?

I noticed something while looking at migroot.io users.
Our most engaged and loyal ones aren’t from SEO or ads — they came because a friend told them.

A friend who had already relocated with us, trusted us, and simply said:

“Use Migroot, it worked for me.”

And here’s the thing: we don’t even have a referral program. People have been recommending us just because they wanted to help. ❤️

Now I’m thinking of launching one and rewarding those recommendations so it’s a real win win.

How about you?
Do you have a referral program?
Does it bring the right kind of users or just deal hunters?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Migroot! I totally agree that moving should be an adventure, not a nightmare. It's cool that you're tackling this issue after your own experiences with international moves.

  2. 1

That’s awesome! Nothing beats genuine word of mouth — it’s the strongest signal of real product-market fit.

  3. 1

Great question — referral programs are tricky because success depends heavily on timing, product-market fit, and incentive structure. From your experience, what’s been more effective: rewarding the referrer, the referee, or both?

Also curious if you're tracking just referrals sent or actual conversions. I’ve seen programs boost activity by simplifying the sharing process (deep links, one-click shares) and setting a clear value prop for the user. Would love to hear how you’re approaching it!

  4. 1

That’s a great question — referral programs can be tricky to get right.
I’ve noticed that for early-stage products, personal outreach often performs better than automated referral systems.
Curious to hear what worked best for you so far?

  5. 1

Yes I have a referral program, still getting the word out there but I expect the referrals to be the main source of users finding the platform.... eventually. How long did it take for your referrals to take off?

  6. 1

Interesting sharing. What I learnt earlier was, don't build it when user hasn't hooked with your product or otherwise you're amplify zero. It seems you're in good position. Good luck.

  7. 1

You should list your upcoming referral program on TapRefer.com too. It helps creators find such programs and gives your brand extra visibility to quality promoters.

October 1, 2025 The most underrated founder habit

When I lived in Asia, mornings felt magical — I’d wake up hours before my team in Europe, have deep, quiet work time, ship features, think clearly.

Now I’m in Brazil, so I wake up with my European team — but the funny part is when they go to sleep, I still have hours left in my day. That’s when I dive into Migroot, plan, build, and still have life left for my kids and surfing.

Time zones shift, chaos happens, but one thing stays true: those early, protected hours are gold. They’re when I make my biggest moves as a founder.

If you’re bootstrapping, remote, or just trying to carve out thinking space — try waking up before everyone else. It’s wild how much more clarity and progress you get.

Those early, quiet hours really are magic. It’s crazy how much clarity you get before the world wakes up.

I prefer the morning surfing from Asia, while you surf they sleep🤣

September 29, 2025 What do you want to see in a product before you pay?

When I started building Migroot, I noticed how most relocation services work. You land on a website, maybe join a group, and then you’re asked to pay before you really know what you’ll get.

I decided to do it differently. In migroot.io you can open the dashboard for free and see the instructions you need for your move. They are not written down to the smallest detail, but they cover all the main steps and show you where to find the rest.

Here’s a screenshot of the free version for moving to Spain 👇

For me it feels more fair. You can try it yourself, understand how the process looks, and only then decide if you want to pay someone to take part of the work off your hands.

That way upgrading is not a blind decision, it’s a natural next step.

I completely agree - I almost never sign up for a service and pay money before seeing what I'm going to get - whether that's personally or when I'm choosing software for a business. Personally, I feel like it could be a scam and professionally, I want to be able to mess around with a tool myself and not just see a demo. Well done!

September 25, 2025 Migroot.io 2.0 in BETA

Building a relocation product right now is super exciting — we get to leverage AI for structure, speed, and automation. But at the same time, we learned the hard way: when it comes to visas, you can’t rely on AI alone. The risk is just too high. That’s why in Migroot 2.0 (beta) we kept a balance — smart AI-powered checklists + real human experts when you actually need them.

What’s new in 2.0:

  • Manage your tasks without waiting for an expert

  • Export your full document set to Google Drive (great for translators)

  • Guides are now built directly into each task (no more endless scrolling)

We’d love for you to give it a spin — especially if you’re planning a move abroad soon.

For Indie Hackers: we’ll do a special offer, and if you’ve got an interesting relocation case, we’re happy to onboard you for free.

Would love your feedback — what balance between AI and human support are you exploring in your products?

Thoughtful changes. I'm curious as to why you can't rely on AI entirely when it comes to visa. Even if I am in a different industry, I was thinking too about a concierge aproach where I don't rely entirely on AI. But you've made me curious. Looking forward to hearing back from you and congrats!

    1. 1

What has been your biggest roadblock to achieve success at the moment?

    2. 1

Oh, what an awesome question! In general, AI agents tend to hallucinate, and in visa matters that can be fatal. For example, at one point our AI agent for filling out visa forms started changing one or two digits in the passport number. If a human hadn’t double-checked it, it could have turned out very badly.

  2. 2

This sounds like a really thoughtful approach 👏. I think the balance you’ve taken makes a lot of sense — AI is amazing for structure and speed, but for high-risk areas (like visas or compliance), human expertise is irreplaceable.

I really like the Google Drive export feature too — that feels super practical for anyone dealing with translations and multiple stakeholders.

In my own projects, I’ve noticed that users feel most confident when they see AI + a clear path to talk to a human if needed. So I’d say you’re on the right track with Migroot 2.0. Excited to see how people respond once they test it out!

    1. 1

Yeah I agree with you human expertise is irreplaceable, what has been your biggest roadblock to achieve success at the moment?

    2. 1

Thank you so much for such warm and thoughtful feedback! If you’d like to join the testing, just drop me an email at kate@migroot.io — I’d love to have you on board.

  3. 1

Really like how you combined AI checklists with real human expertise, that’s such a practical balance, especially for something as critical as visas and relocation.

Curious: which part of the process turned out to need human input the most (documents, legal checks, country-specific rules)?

    1. 1

What do you think is your biggest roadblock to achieve success at the moment?

      1. 1

Good question — right now the biggest roadblock is getting consistent early users to stress-test the product. Once I have that feedback loop solid, I know things will accelerate.

        1. 1

That makes a lot of sense getting consistent early users is one of the hardest but most important steps. A solid feedback loop really does change everything.

If you’d like, I know an expert who specializes in helping founders at exactly this stage refining their audience and building those first repeatable user acquisition systems. I can connect you if you’re interested, no pressure.

Either way, I’m rooting for you once those first users start giving feedback regularly, things will definitely accelerate

          1. 1

I’d definitely be interested in that connection 🙌

Getting early users into a consistent feedback loop is exactly where I’m focusing right now with Kaelis. Happy to connect and learn from people who’ve helped founders at this stage.

Happy to be of help to you. You can message me on my expert username under my profile to share the link or are you fine with me sharing it with you here?

June 2, 2025 First takeaways from 10 UX interviews

Happy Monday, IndieHackers! I’m Kate, building migroot.io — a platform that makes collecting documents for your visa clear and not scary. Think of it as a relocation tracker that feels more like a to-do list with a brain, not a black hole of bureaucracy.

Before we ship version 2.0, we decided to go all in on user research. We talked to paying users, people who dropped off, and those just testing the free version.

Here are 7 things we learned this week from 10 UX interviews:

  1. People want immigration to feel fun — but they don’t want "fun" tasks like “create a playlist for your new country.” It’s about playful progress, not gimmicks.

  2. The first task users see matters a lot. It needs to feel doable and meaningful — quick wins build trust.

  3. Real humans still win over AI when it comes to immigration questions. People want someone who “gets it.”

  4. Not every digital nomad loves Kanban. We’re rethinking how we visualize progress.

  5. Onboarding is everything. It must be clear, fast, and not boring.

  6. Users aren’t comfortable uploading sensitive documents to a free tool. Trust = value.

  7. Talk to people more. Seriously. That’s why we’re doing a second round of interviews this week — and next week, I’ll be back with a fresh batch of insights.

What are you learning from your users this week?

Kate, I’ve really been enjoying these regular updates — thanks for sharing your process so openly. It’s inspiring to see someone go all-in on real user feedback before a major release. 🙌

I’m currently working on the StoreGrowth Plugin — a tool to help ecommerce stores boost their sales and optimize growth. Would love for you to check it out if you’re curious.

Looking forward to next week’s batch of UX learnings!

Great progress! I love the point about giving users really quick wins especially when the process can feel overwhelming if presented all at once

May 27, 2025 Looking for users for a 30-min UX interview

Hey Indie Hackers! I’m Kate, working on a product that simplifies the process of preparing documents for long-term visas (think: digital nomads, remote workers, families relocating, etc).

Right now, I’m improving the registration → dashboard → aha! moment flow — and I need your help!

I’m looking for a few people to jump on a 30-minute UX call with us. Here's what it involves:

  1. A quick Google Meet with me (30 mins)

  2. During the call, you'll sign up on the site and go through the first session

  3. Share your impressions — what feels smooth, what feels clunky, what’s confusing

As a thank-you, I'm happy to offer a short consultation in return — I can share advice on relocation (I’ve done several myself), launching on Product Hunt, or anything else you’re curious about.

Drop a comment below or email me at kate@migroot.io 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

May 19, 2025 Talk to your users or die

Happy Monday, Indie Hackers! I’m Kate, building migroot.io — a tracker that helps people collect the right documents to relocate smoothly.

Thought I was lightning fast on the court—until I saw the video my kid took. 😅
Same with product building.

You think your UX is smooth, your value is clear, your flow is intuitive...
Then you talk to users — and realize they’re totally missing the point.

Last week I did a bunch of interviews and learned that our free version just isn’t landing.
People didn’t understand what it was for or how it helps.
The problem wasn’t the product — it was the onboarding and messaging. We were hiding the value behind too many steps and assumptions.

Made me realize:
1/ If users don’t get the value in the first few minutes, they bounce.
2/ It’s not their fault. It’s ours.
3/ And no, analytics won’t tell you why.

Y Combinator is right: talk to your users.

What’s helped you show the core value of your product early on?
Especially if you’re running a freemium model?

  1. 1

yes i want talk to users.

  2. 1

Couldn't agree more with you. Im working on a messaging app myself (althogh it's in dev phase), I upholdthis quote from Steve Jobs when working on my platform: "Simple can be harder than complex" Every single thing whether it's your company's name, your theme, and even the minor things need to scream what the product does.

The core values of my platform was clear from the beginning that my messaging app has to be less cluttered, cleaner, more focused on the core purpose (messaging), simpler, and most importantly, more privacy centric. The UIs of my direct competitors (WhatsApp and Telegram) are although easy to navigate, but still I've noticed that lots of people I interact withDO NOT know about certain features the apps contain just because they're too deep inside the UIs. That's a strong point for me, probably would also give you an idea about 'clear message.'

May 12, 2025 Makers — anyone currently applying for the Spain DN Visa?

May 8, 2025 Gamification in serious products – yay or nay?

Hey Indie Hackers! I'm Kate, working on migroot.io – a tool that simplifies collecting documents for visa applications.

We help users prep for digital nomad visas with clear to-do lists – imagine a Notion doc someone already built for you, but outside Notion and way more user-friendly.

👉 Here's a sneak peek

One feature we thought would add fun and delight: gamified side quests like
🎧 "Play an Indonesian Spotify playlist"
🍳 "Cook Spanish paella at home"

It sounded great. People on Product Hunt loved it – lots of likes, heart emojis, and comments saying "this is so cool."

But in the real world? Over 80% of paying users didn’t complete or even check off these tasks.
Lesson learned: fun shouldn’t get in the way of function. At least not when someone's trying to get through a high-stress process like visa paperwork.

We're now exploring gamification that supports the core mission – helping people relocate fast and confidently – instead of adding fluff.

Have you tried gamifying “serious” workflows? What actually worked for you?

  1. 1

Great question—one pillar that often gets overlooked in gamification is storytelling. Especially in more ‘serious’ apps, building a narrative around the user journey makes a huge difference. Think HubSpot framing users as the hero of their own story, or Asana turning tasks into missions.

  2. 1

Yay, as long as you don't cross the line between gamification and dark patterns.

About

Relocating should be an adventure, not a nightmare. After moving between countries with our families we realized there's something fundamentally broken in how people handle long-term moves abroad
