Hevy
Simple workout logging, insightful analytics, and community.
We just got featured by Apple today in 12 countries including USA, Germany, and several countries in South East Asia! This is the first time we've ever gotten featured and it's incredibly exciting.
We are appearing in the lists "Apps We Love Right Now".
A little over 2 months ago we released a paid version of Hevy. Since we're bootstrapped, we have exactly $0 to spend on marketing. We rely completely on organic downloads, from word of mouth or from people just browsing the App/Play Store. With that we manage to bring in about 50-80 new humans a day to Hevy. As of today 100 of those humans have decided that Hevy is worth paying for!
It's also worth noting that when we released Hevy Pro we gave all existing users free Pro accounts, so all of these 100 users signed up in the last 2 months.
I've never had a single person pay for anything I've built before so to have 100 people is absolutely staggering to me.

The Hevy app is pretty slick! I've added it to That App Show. Keep up the good work.

Sure! Users can choose between $3/month or $24/year.

After 6 months of iterating on the free product, we felt Hevy was robust enough to start offering a Pro version with a paid subscription.nThe first step to making Hevy a viable business.
Our main priority with the first release was "don't be a douche". A lot of apps shove their paywall down your throat and constantly remind you how much you're missing out on by using the free version. Since we're trying to build a community, our free users are super important to us and we don't want to discourage them from using the app.
That said, we'll have to obviously find a balance between having a compelling enough Pro experience so that users convert. At the same time, not taking away too much from the free experience so our community can thrive.
That balancing act starts today.

Super excited to launch on Product Hunt today. Got a bunch of great feedback, and had an amazing reaction from the community. Got a big spike of users!
We got tweeted by the official Product Hunt account which was really exciting. This sets us up to start our marketing for Hevy!

We have been developing the app for a few months and have gotten some organic traction on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Our organic reach has almost doubled recently, especially on iOS due to our focus on ASO. We've mostly improved the store listing and added more relevant keywords to our target audience. This looks like a great start.

Just realized you're working on a workout app. Take a look at how another workout app is using Nir Eyal Hooked model to make their users come back. You can read, and then listen to Nir give examples. Might be helpful to your long-term success!

About
I started working on Hevy because I wanted to interact with my friends who were going to the gym. Other apps I found were bloated and confusing, so I decided to build a better social workout logger.

Awesome! Been using Hevy the past few months and enjoying it!
Nice!! Thanks for using Hevy! Glad you’re enjoying it :D
Very nice congrats, although, if possible to share what solution you are using for subscription in the app ? @guillemros
Sure! We're using https://www.revenuecat.com/ to handle our subscription logic
Awesome, thank you i have an app which i'm considering to introduce the subscription to generate revenue. However, did you researched any other better solution than revenuecat or used it directly? And how you found it so far.
It's been great so far! The time we've saved not having to setup and maintain subscription integrations on both platforms has been a lifesaver. They offer a React Native integration too which made it even easier for us to integrate with. We've been able to stay in the free tier since our MRR is still well within the limit. That said, all their analytics tools aren't available in their free plan so sometimes it feels like we're flying a bit blind. To make up for this, we (@guillemros) is doing the bare minimum financial analytics basically by hand using spreadsheets.
I think once our revenue grows a bit more we'll gladly pay the $119/month for their "Analyze Plan".
Hope that helps!
Congrats! Really cool. If you want/can, I'd be very interested in:
Keep it up!
Hey @EeKay i'm one of the Hevy cofounders.
The app is built using React Native. So under the hood it's native iOS views but we're using a 3rd party framework. Also the company i used to work for had an app that was completely rendered in a web view and they were featured by apple a bunch, so seems like Apple doesn't care how the app is built.
We saw a 3-5x boost on iOS new users. Our numbers aren't massive to begin with as we rely on 100% organic installs ($0 marketing budget). We went from 25-50 new iOS users a day to 120-190.
Thanks for sharing 🙌🏻. Glad to see that Apple opened up for featuring apps and looks at value instead of the type of implementation!
Good to see an increase, it is no wonder pill, but i guess it will amplify your presence.
All the best with Hevy and your endeavors!
congratulations! How did you get notified that you are being features?
We did not :(. We just saw a huge spike in our daily iOS downloads and knew something was up.
Congrats. I can probably google this, but would be interested to hear how you got there.
It was actually totally unexpected. We got in touch with Apple about 2 months ago and never got a response. I'm not sure if us getting in touch with them had anything to do with this small feature.
I wrote a post on how we got started with Hevy :)

Thanks for sharing your story! Very interesting, also read the medium post. Just a quick question, how did you reach out to Apple?
Cool thanks for sharing. I assume you're seeing orders of magnitude more traffic ay?
The impact isn't as dramatic as you might think. We're seeing about 3x-4x more users as a result but far from "orders of magnitude".
Good on you mate
Thanks @oli_typified !!
Damn, I've been looking forward to some fitness apps, never heard of it before..Please tell me more! I'd read the description and all, but I really want to hear something convincing (& enticing) from the co-founder himself!! If that's alright?
CONGRATS!
That is a big milestone for sure! I've had some of my iOS (back in 2014!) and macOS (or OS X when i was doing this... lol. i'm aging myself...!)
you can see those here, and here, and here, and here.... there are a few others, but, i'm tired of searching my own fucking blog...!
for me, the process was distinctly relationship-driven. outside of building a decent product, i had some folks who i knew who were on the apple team who gave me an inside track on how they get qualified, etc.
otherwise... it's completely opaque... no one really knows (and that's probably a good thing...?).
lmk if you want more thoughts... i have tons!
**EDIT: it's been crazy to think i've been featured so many times... it really is relationship-driven... in a lot of ways...
i should write something more about this...
