We just shipped a big update on Facet.ink — and it’s all about ownership.

As a special gift just before Christmas, authors can now download their texts written on Facet — chapter by chapter — as Markdown.

This means:

• Full control over your writing

• Easy portability to any editor or platform

• No platform lock-in

We believe writers should always own their words. Facet is built around that principle, and this update is another step in that direction.

On Facet, writers currently draft and publish directly on the platform. Readers then enjoy a clean, distraction-free experience in our built-in reader.

But I’ve been wondering: would it make sense to also let writers download their texts as Markdown?

The upside:

• It signals openness → writers truly “own” their work.

• It could integrate with personal workflows (Obsidian, blogs, backups).

• It shows Facet isn’t trying to lock anyone in.

The downside:

• If texts are mostly consumed outside Facet, the community effect is weaker.

• It might complicate formatting and consistency.

• Could make future monetization models harder to enforce.

So I’m torn between keeping Facet’s experience fully integrated vs. adding export as a trust-building feature.

👉 What do you think? As a writer or reader, would the ability to export in Markdown make you more likely to use a platform like Facet? Or is it unnecessary if the reading experience is already great inside the app?

We’ve just added a new feature to Facet: Essays ✨

Until now, Facet was mainly focused on books, which made sense for structured long-form content with chapters. But not every piece of writing fits neatly into that format.

With Essays on Facet, writers can now publish long-form texts without chapters. Essays are instantly public and shareable, so you can post your thoughts, arguments, or reflections right away and let readers dive in without friction.
