I've been reading and hearing more-and-more the desire for white-collar workers to continue working from their home after the pandemic is over rather than at an office. Or, in the least, have a hybrid option.
This article found that, of those surveyed, half would be willing to quit their job if they could not longer work from home in some form.
I completely agree.
Working from home has been awesome and if I ever was forced away from full-time indie-hacking on cleavr.io, then one of my top requirements for a new gig would be that it has to be fully (or mostly) remote.
Last year, before the current pandemic started to go off the rails, I wrote an article on how I used to hate working from home, but now I love it..
Re-reading it a year later, there are a couple of things that come to mind:
When I wrote the article, I probably would have been somewhat OK with getting a non-remote job again. But, now? There is no way!
Being more healthy went sideways for quite a while - I think half due to gyms being closed (which is where I routinely would go for my breaks) and half because I was fixated on my work. Since around the end of last year, I again made more effort to focus on health and balance work time better, and again once on track for improved health!
I'd assume many of us are continuing to work remotely. What does your office look like in the future? Home? Office? Laptop on the beach?
There is a struggle with the hybrid option - if you do not arrange for others you want to meet in person to be there on the same day you come in then you may drive in for nothing. The gym thing is also an issue because many were using an office facility or taking advantage of sports programs offered at work.
Even so I think the force people to work from the office stance is regressive. Number one declaring "mission accomplished" on the virus is premature. Working from the office maybe a risk for a long time.
Number two productivity on working from home clearly came out as well or in some cases better. So even if you force people back to the office they are very unlikely to sit at noisy desks waiting to get dragged into distracting conversations as before. More likely, now used to being able to concentrate and control their interactions, they will find some remote corner of the building anyway.
