Study finds the top 5 startup ecosystems remain the same

Startup Genome's top startup ecosystems ranking has some familiar cities atop the list.
Wasn't expecting to see that Boston overtook Beijing as a tech center. I've been here for a few years and there are dozen of tech companies here, but it feels more like a bio-tech/medical hub then a tech hub. I can think of 1) HubSpot 2) Pegasystems 3) CarGurus and others that are in Cambridge, but it's still shocking to see Boston on this list. I guess MIT and all the other colleges here give it a leg up.
Here's an image of the chart: https://imgur.com/a/j8CnRxS --> Looks like Boston has been in the top 5 and #3 for the last few years, but I wonder how far the gap is between it and LA/NYC.
You make a good point. A lot of these types of lists heavily weigh VC investments and the bio-tech/medical tech space has drawn tons of funding. I think it's partially Boston's educational depth too. There are lots of highly educated people there and that can make for a depth of talent.
What about some underrated cities?
I'm curious about what mid-sized cities in Europe and Asia people might recommend?
I would love to see this for solopreneurs, micropreneurs and small businesses.
The top five:
For background, Startup Genome is an entrepreneurial-focused policy advisory and research firm and has done this report for 10 years running.
Some other notable nuggets:
Seoul entered the global top 10 ecosystems for the first time
India is rising. Delhi and Mumbai re-joined Bangalore in the top 40.
Latin America was the fastest-growing region in the world in terms of venture funding in 2021, according to Crunchbase. An estimated $19.5 billion was invested in the region.
The U.S. has 7, top-20 cities
"Despite the early shadow it cast on startups, COVID-19 ultimately boosted the sector by accelerating digitization. Since the pandemic, tech companies grew 2.3 times more than their non-tech counterparts."
