SEO Advice Needed - Domain Redirect

Hi, I recently purchased the .com domain for manypixels.co.

Since we rely heavily on organic traffic, I am a bit afraid of making the switch (and doing a 301 redirect .co to .com) and that it will hurt our rankings in the short term.

The initial motivation to move to .com was a tweet from remoteok's founder and their increased in traffic after the migration.

Does anyone have experience with those types of migration? What was the impact on traffic?

I do, but I’m not sure we’re talking about the same traffic amount. I used to write on a Portuguese blog (webpersonalization.com.br) and now we’re migrating to croct.com. On some posts, we went from ~150 daily impressions to ~250 daily impressions. Again, was a small blog, but we saw a very nice increase anyway. All we did was add a canonical tag right after we publish the new blog post. And then, after that, we did a 301 redirect. I’m not sure it is true, but some people told me it was important that Google last indexed version had a canonical tag pointing to the new URL.
