Dropbox pushed off their paywall (storage-based) when you invite users.
Notion does the same.
what are other examples where you've seen this done well?

Great question. I don't know if this applies, but when I started using Robinhood a while back to invest in stocks, I actually got a bunch of friends to signup as well, which is not super typical of me as a normal user.
This was because Robinhood gives the inviter and invitee both a free share of a stock when the invitee signs up.
An interesting twist was that this free stock could be a low-priced stock share with the price of $5 or could be a high-priced share from a company like Apple, which was going for around $200 at the time.
This actually made it quite fun to invite my friends - as we all had that glimmer of hope in our eyes for the $200 share when the free stock was revealed.
