Monetizing a simple app for roleplayers

Hi Hackers!

I am a long time roleplayer, and since I moved out on the country side, it has been a real hassel to to get a group going.

I used to play a lot of "one shots", meaning games that only lasted a single sitting (3-4 hours), in contrast to a campaign (several sittings, if not hundreds).

An idea spawned in my brain; I could make a simple "looking for group" board, specifically aimed a roleplayers that just wanted to get a game going, preferably NOW, using some sort of video chat service. A bonus here is that it would totally scratch my own itch, and I would probably use the site a lot myself.

The site would be incredibly cheap to run (webserver + database), but I'd prefer, if I could find a sleek way to monetize it, without charging the users money directly.

What options do I have for monetization of such a site? I can name a few:

  • Selling my own ebooks on the site, related to roleplaying games (I haven't written any yet)
  • Advertisement (for example, links to other sites that sell roleplaying accessories or similar)

What other options do I have?

  1. 2

ads + affiliate (drivethrurpg and amazon).

  2. 2

I would think the easiest thing would be affiliate links. Probably Amazon. It's a place to get started.

Later if you find some book or something selling well then you could buy some inventory wholesale and take a higher cut of the revenue.
