Limited Marketing Budget: Michael Jordan vs Phil Jackson

Every bootstrapped startup has limited capital.

Curious as to which option a fellow founders have chosen previously for their marketing team and the success or failure of that decision?

Here is the scenario:

You have 4 junior-mid marketing team members, however none are truly all stars - although they are committed. To win, you know you'll need a 5th team member who can execute.

*** All things being equal, we are all assuming that both candidates passed the sniff test and are collaborative, the right fit for our culture, and the preliminary leg work testing their skill set, personality etc etc has all been done.

You know either one could possibly get you to where you need to go since both have won championships before and of course as mentioned in the beginning - you only have the equity/budget to bring ONE on board.

Do you bring on the hands on in the weeds executor or the strategic coach?

In this case, I'd take Phil... You already have 4 team members who probably can't do anything by themselves. Adding MJ, would mean that he basically needs to do everything himself (I'm assuming he's not much of a leader/coach/mentor, but more MJ on the court). Phil however, could get those 4 decent marketers to a higher level.

Interesting. I guess I always considered both have value at different stages of a company, one where you have little to no management layers and then adding layers as your grow, but what you are saying does make sense.
