I just crossed 1,000 registered users for my survey tool (KanoSurveys.com).
It's a pretty niche product and I was never really sure that there was much of a market for it, but I'm feeling a lot more confident recently. I've also got 30+ paying users too, although they've only paid a very small nominal fee.
Would you say that counts as "idea validated"? What do you look for in terms of validation?
interesting, may I know how you attract those 1000 registered users? I mean, how do you market your product?
SEO so far. I have a bunch of articles about the survey technique that encourage people to register.
I also got lots of users recently as my tool was featured in a university course so the students all signed up.
I don't think it is super clear from what you have written:
If the answer to the second question is yes, then CONGRATS my man, you have definitely validated.
If not, then you might still need to make some changes/ask some questions, the solution might be very close.
Currently monetising with subscription. And yes, customers are signing up for a subscription (although it’s a small price). I’ve actually increased the price just recently and have had several conversions at that price too.
I am wondering if I could also experiment with other payment modes - annual subscription perhaps, or one user asked to pay per survey
Yeah I mean, if they pay a subscription then you are good!
Prices can always be changed later.
Also, annual plans make total sense, no friction at all.
Congrats!
I would say the 1000 registrations validate the people looking for a solution, but it doesn't validate that you can solve their problem.
If the 30+ paying users stay with your platform (retention), then that would validate you are offering the proper solution to these people.
Thanks. That’s a great way of looking at it.
The product is reaching a good level of functionality so I’m going to be focusing more on traffic and conversion, and will definitely dive into why people aren’t being retained.
Hey @willbarden 👋
First of all, congrats on the milestone 🎉 !
I feel that the 30+ users paying for your product are more a validation than the 1000 registered users, as they actually paid you.
It doesn't reduce the milestone though, as it's always great to have users in your app anyway 😄
It'd be interesting for you to know why those 3% of users are paying and why others are not upgrading to see if you've indeed validated a product use-case 😊
Thanks! I only added a paid tier at about 5-600 free users so actually a good % have paid up so far.
And yes I agree that paying users is a stronger signal. I’ll have a think about how to collect feedback from people that don’t pay… maybe an exit survey on the payment page

Good idea. I think I’ll also look into what paying users are doing, then I might be able to see a difference that could be related to conversion
Did they just registered? or did they also created a survey and shared it with the world?
How many of them created a survey?
From all that surveys how many of them have actually been used.

Yeah absolutely worth talking to the paying users you’re right.
This is all SEO marketing so far. I did a longer milestone update on the product recently on IH. Roughly 45% of users have a survey with at least one response. I don’t know if that’s good or not though. I what do you reckon?
