I Spent 180 Hours Building A Failed Meat Website

My Name is Adam Wright & I Spent 180 Hours Building A Failed Meat Business

BTW, This is an interview from Biz Flop. We share stories about failed startups & the lessons we can learn from them.

Here's my story: I created a website called Meat Yum (meatyum.com), which tracks meat sales and specials across all US cities. I initiated this project with the primary goal of developing coding skills and utilized APIs to gather data from various grocery stores like Kroger.

My motivation for starting this project stemmed from my personal diet, focusing on keto, paleo, and carnivore.

One of the key challenges that led to my initial setback was underestimating the extensive data processing required.

This involved dealing with data from multiple grocery store chains and the difficulties associated with reaching potential users.

I attempted to promote the business through Facebook groups and forums but made limited progress in pushing it forward. Only gaining around 160 subscribers.I dedicated over 180 hours to building the platform, investing approximately 30 hours per week over a span of 6 weeks.

However, despite my efforts, I did not achieve the desired results.Originally, I planned to monetize the platform through a newsletter.

However, I came to realize that for this strategy to work, I would need a substantial subscriber base, potentially around 10,000 subscribers.

I quickly recognized that due to the broad nature of my audience (general groceries), rather than being niche-focused, the feasibility of this approach became questionable.

In hindsight, I should have targeted a specific audience with clear value propositions to facilitate easier monetization.

Lessons Learned from Biz Flop:

Prioritize engaging with potential customers early in the development process to validate ideas and gather insights.

Launch a minimal viable product to test the market and gather user feedback before investing extensive resources.

Reiterate the value of user feedback in refining and improving the product.

So you like meat ? So do i. Ok let's continue.

So you think you can spend more 180 hours to see where your idea failed. Could be a nice exercise. :)

I am going to pretend i am a user ... let me go to your website ...

ok i choose Alabama ... i choose Adamsville ... i got Whole Foods - Mountain Brook ... i press the link "meat sale" ... and i got fruit juices ... where is the meat ? where is the deal ?
and i saw i was 14.88 miles away from store "Whole Foods - Mountain Brook" ... really ? Only 14.88 miles ?
Then press directions and ... i got a round trip price from 881 € , from Lisbon, Portugal to Birmingham, USA ... and after i arrived aeroport i need to travel to the address 3100 Cahaba Village Pl, Birmingham, AL 35243, USA ... to get some juices ?

So why did it fail ? why ? i think you have here many questions to answer.

I wish you the best of luck to your project
