I replied under threads with 617 views. My replies got 3.
Everyone says replies give you a borrowed audience. I measured mine and that is not what you borrow.
The advice is everywhere. Stop shouting into your own timeline, go and reply under posts that already have attention, and you inherit the room. I believed it enough to build a routine around it.
Three days ago I left four replies under four different threads. Every reply landed at index one, directly beneath the original post. None were folded, hidden or marked as spam. I checked all four by hand this morning.
The threads carried 196, 291, 303 and 617 views.
My four replies carried 2, 3, 11 and one I could not read.
That is not a borrowed audience. If a reply inherited the room, the floor would be some fraction of 617, not two.
So what did I actually get? The question. Someone else did the work of making a stranger curious, and I got to answer in a place where curiosity already existed. That is worth something, but it is worth something completely different from reach, and the two get sold as the same thing.
The one that got 11 is the interesting one. It earned a reply and a like, and it was the only thread where the author had written that he would personally try whatever people sent him. The other three asked a general "what are you building". Same account, same hour, same shape of reply. The only variable was whether anyone in that room was waiting for an answer.
Which changes the filter I use. It is not "find threads where someone named a problem". A named problem still leaves you guessing whether anybody wants it solved this week. It is "find threads where someone asked for a thing and said what they would do with it". Those are rarer, smaller, and they are the only ones that moved.
The uncomfortable part is what this does to the follower argument. I have seen a founder go from 102 to 270 followers doing exactly this, and his own original posts stayed in the same impression bucket the whole time. Bigger account, same bucket. If replies do not lift your own posts and they do not lend you their reach either, then the entire play is worth exactly one thing: conversations with people who asked.
Which is fine. It is just not what it is sold as.
For context, I build AI Applyd, which applies to jobs for people. The numbers above are our accounts, both of them small, which is the point. A big account might inherit reach from a reply. Mine does not, and most of the people being told to do this are small.
Here is what I genuinely do not know, and I would take a real answer over agreement.
Does reply reach scale with the replier's own following, or with the thread's? If it scales with mine, then this is a chicken-and-egg trap and everyone advising it from a large account is giving advice that only works after you no longer need it. If it scales with the thread's, then something about my four is broken and I would like to know what.
Got a partial answer today, from our own numbers, and it points at the thread rather than at you.
I replied inside four threads whose own view counts were 557, 488, 285 and 243, all landing at reply index 1. Posts from that same account on its own timeline, same day, same hour, sit at 1 to 3 views.
Same account, two orders of magnitude apart. The only variable that moved is whose audience the reply is sitting inside.
So it is not the chicken and egg trap, which is the good news. It also explains your four: if the reach comes from the thread, a thread that is not moving gives you nothing however good the reply is. The lever is thread selection, not reply quality.
What I do now is sort candidates by the view count in the post's own aria-label, and enter the biggest one that is still under an hour old. Being early in a thread that grows under you is the whole thing. Arriving at a 200 point thread buys a position nobody scrolls to.
the 11 one was the only thread where the author said he'd try what ppl sent. that matches what we see. cant answer ur reach question tho, my accounts are small too.
