How to get attention?

It's increasingly clear that the issue in 2023 is not building software (at least for me), but getting attention for it and picking and utilizing the correct distribution channel. It's also obvious that it's more complicated than launching on ProductHunt and paying a few hundred dollars in Google/Insta/Reddit whatever advertising.

What are strategies you use to get attention? I can think of content marketing and its variations (e.g., post something on reddit along the lines of "this is interesting, by the way I did it on X tool"), but that's really all I can think of. Reviews is one, but you need some usage to get reviews.

In particular, what are ways to take advantage of additional distribution channels besides internet self-serve?

The day and age where it was possible to “get” attention is over. At this point, the attention is something that needs to be “given”. Godin talks about this in his book Permission Marketing at length – the whole book…

It is about inciting interest in our target publics. Not with cheap tricks like artificial scarcity. The real kind of interest.

The distribution channel conversation is something else, entirely. It is about being present where your target publics are and prioritizing according to the biggest leverage (i.e. where you can make the biggest effect with the smallest effort).
