Three different founders asked me about it this month. So here's the data, because the marketing only shows the before/after and skips the part that matters most: what happens after you stop.
The pitch: inject once a week, appetite goes quiet, weight drops, one less decision in a week already full of them. For a solo founder that sounds like free leverage.
It's not free. What happens after you stop is worse than most people think.
The part they don't show you
The scale going down feels like a win, but it's the easiest number to trust and one of the worst to trust blindly.
STEP 1, the trial that got Wegovy approved: 17.3% weight loss over 68 weeks. One year after stopping, two thirds of it came back. Net result: 5.6%, not 17.3%.
Not a fluke. A 2025 meta-analysis pooling multiple GLP-1 trials found the same rebound every time, across weight, blood sugar, blood pressure. Mounjaro and Zepbound aren't different: in SURMOUNT-4, people switched to placebo regained 14% of their body weight in a year.
This only "works" if you never stop. Nobody says that up front.
Muscle makes up roughly a quarter of the weight lost on average. Up to 40-60% in some cases, depending on dose and whether people were lifting at all.
Lose that much muscle, regain the fat once you stop, and you can end up heavier and weaker than when you started. That's the real cost. It's not on the label.
What I'd do if I were a founder on one
The drug quiets appetite, it doesn't touch why you were eating that way. Stress, a bad launch, boredom during a slow week, none of that goes away.
If I were on one, I'd use the quiet window to:
Relearn what a normal meal actually looks like, not what the tracker says
Lift weights 2-3x a week so I'm not trading fat for muscle
Build 5-6 meals I default to, so food stops being a decision I have to make
Actually deal with what's driving the eating before the appetite comes back
Not anti-medication. For serious obesity it can be a legit, lifesaving tool. My issue is people treating it as the whole plan instead of a temporary assist while they fix the actual problem.
