Experience with coding tests when hiring developers?

Hi everyone,

I am wondering: what are your experiences with coding tests (e.g. testdome.com, devskiller.com)?

I am not a coder myself but regularly hire React, Python developers (for example from outsourcing platforms such as Upwork). Usually, I look for their profile credentials, but then actually assess them after the first hours of working - do they get the result done, are they good at communicating, etc.

Do such tests truly help to find good developers or do they just upset people during the hiring process? What are your experiences, thoughts on this?

What would you do to find good developers (as a non-developer)?

@Dealsflow - you could try posting your requirements for Devs here on IH and see who responds. If you look at my profile, I'm following a lot of Devs that seem to be really good -- so maybe you can post something here, and invite them to look at your job posting?

Depends on the level of the developer. There are not enough good ones so they are in a position to select work. You need them more than they need you. So I wouldn't unnecessarily complicate things. If we are talking about Juniours - they are ready for anything to get a job.

+1 - Actually, this is how I hire most contractors.

There are some exceptions, where you can just tell someone is a rock-star in what they do. But, then it's not always easy to get their time because they're usually pretty busy doing work for other people.
