
Over the past few months, my LinkedIn feed has been flooded with incredible CVs, highly talented developers, and intense competition. On top of that, recent industry reports (like Anthropic’s research) highlight that over 70%+ of routine programming tasks are now heavily exposed to AI automation.
For someone pursuing a CS degree or working in tech, this begs a serious question: Is traditional software engineering fading?
My take: No, but the baseline has fundamentally shifted.
Here is what I’m observing in the current market:
1️⃣ The "Syntax Era" is Over: Writing boilerplate code, simple CRUD APIs, or basic UI components isn’t a differentiator anymore. AI handles that in seconds.
2️⃣ The "Junior" Definition Has Changed: Companies aren't just looking for someone who can write functions; they want engineers who can design systems, solve complex architecture problems, and think product-first.
3️⃣ AI as a Force Multiplier: The real competition isn't AI vs. Humans. It’s developers who leverage AI tools/agents to ship 10x faster vs. those who don't.
So, how do we adapt as developers?
Shift focus from coding syntax → System Architecture & Product Engineering.
Learn to build AI-driven workflows, automations, and custom integrations.
Prioritize end-to-end execution over isolated coding tasks.
The noise in the job market is loud, but the demand for problem solvers (not just code writers) is higher than ever.
