AI visibility needs both: your site and third-party signals

While building RankHit, we kept testing prompts like:

“What are the best [tool category] for [industry]?”

One pattern kept showing up: AI recommendations do not only depend on your own website.

They often pull context from comparison pages, review sites, and “best software” lists. If your product is not clearly represented on credible pages that define your category, there are fewer outside signals supporting its inclusion.

At the same time, you still need to make your own site easy to understand:

clear answers to buyer questions
content around the right topics and use cases
solid metadata, structure, schema, and internal links

My current view is that AI visibility needs both:

Third-party credibility
Strong on-site relevance

We are building RankHit around the second part: helping small teams find query-aligned content opportunities and turn them into structured, publish-ready articles.

For founders already trying to show up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or AI Overviews: what has made the biggest difference so far, content, reviews/listicles, PR, or something else?
